Day 6: Boise to Island Park

Life comes at you fast 2 days after the fact I have barely even begun to process all that we saw in our "5 hour drive" across the bottom part of Idaho.  I want to keep this Blog as current as possible, but this has simply not been practical.   We are slowing down the trip and modifying the route as continuing at our current paste will lead to increasing numbers of cascading failures. -- Written from a nice hotel room in Billings MT  Rainy Day In Boise We were up late and the Bed n Breakfast was really nice.  The commons had a good spot for me to camp out and type my blog.  Other guests would drift by.  The rain kept falling in a relaxing pattern on our roof.  Also noted the beautiful flow banding present in the "Leathered granite" on the lounge countertops.  Most suppliers of designer countertops are hesitant to reveal their sources and / or explain how / where the rock was quarried.  Even the nomenclature for countertop stone is often w...

Day 16: A brief trip to the New Hampshire Seacoast

  A quick trip Today is Father's day and so the post is short and limited to a short outing in preparation of the festivities.  My family is awesome, but I have yet to get a sense of whether or not they wish to be a deep part of this blog or not so I keep the two worlds separate One of the fun features of the Granite state is the number of small farms still in operation.  The rocky soils were abandoned by many over a century ago for more easily tilled fields out in the mid-west.  Those that stayed had a hardscrabble existence shifting to dairy, corn, berries, and poultry,  but never at a large scale.  THis is likely one reason Ice cream out here tastes so freaking good. We began picking up some fresh eggs, yogurt, and garlic sprouts and even getting to meet on of the farmers who made this happen.  Then we embarked on a drive through the woods. Day 1: San Diego to Coalinga 320 Miles

The Bucket List Trip So here we are in 2021 Fully vaxed, and still working remotely.  A situation where I can literally be anywhere I want so long as I log in and do my work.  As I am now a geology teacher I think:  why not visit some truly remarkable geology across the US and also check off a few more states in my quest to visit all 50?   Why not teach Volcanology from Mount Shasta,  teach rivers from the headwaters f  Mississippi, Geologic Time from the KT bounday...?  So here we start June 5, 2021 San Diego California.  A bit of irony as that there is no shortage of geologic wonders within a 3-4 hour drive of where we live:  beaches, deserts, active fault lines, and exposures of rocks from a diverse set of ages.  This trip we blow right past many of these places in favor of areas that have been "quiet" a much longer time, slow processes can sometimes reveal a new level of grandeur.
